Tom studied Fashion and Textile Design at the University of Technology from 1990 to 1994.
During this time, he picked up photography as one of his major subjects.
One of his first projects was documenting a group of his friends who were performing a drag show at the famous Albury Hotel on Oxford St.

One friend in this group also happened
to be the Arts Editor
at a local gay newspaper,
Capital Q.
Tom was offered
the job of staff photographer,
and then spent the next two years
or so documenting
that golden age of gay
life in Sydney.
